Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

The Role

We're looking for a Technical Writer with a background in developer documentation and experience helping developers be successful. We're growing the Square Developers team as we expand the platform and engage the broader developer community. We consider documentation an important part of the platform and essential to developers' success. Reporting to the Developer Documentation Manager, the Technical Writing team helps set our documentation strategy and partners with platform engineering teams. This collaboration enables us to provide high-quality, accurate documentation to help educate developers. Come grow the Square developer community!

You Will

  • Write concise and useful documentation for Square's external developer audience.
  • Write code snippets and interactive tutorials to help developers get up to speed quickly.
  • Work with product managers, developer advocates, designers, and marketing to shape the entirety of the Square developer experience. You will also collaborate with Developer Support for content improvements.
  • Work with product and engineering teams to enhance and expand Square's developer platform.
  • Contribute to internal documentation projects.

You Have

  • 2–3 years of technical writing experience for a developer audience.
  • 3+ years of experience working directly with engineers, product managers, and other partners to help document new developer products and features.
  • Experience writing all common forms of developer documentation (API reference, conceptual guides, and tutorials).
  • Comfortable working in an unstructured writing environment with evolving processes and in-house systems.
  • Comfortable handling multiple projects and prioritizing simultaneous deadlines and ad hoc requests.
  • Experience writing in Markdown syntax.
  • Familiarity with at least one of the following: PHP, Ruby, .NET, Python, JavaScript, Java, Kotlin, or Swift — and the desire to gain experience with more.
  • Comfortable working at the command line in a Macintosh environment.
  • Familiarity with Git and GitHub.
  • A portfolio of technical writing samples for review.
  • Accounting familiarity or background is a plus.
