Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. The Role

As a Creative Director on the brand team at Square, you’ll be responsible for empowering everyone at Square with the strategic, verbal, and visual tools required to make breakthrough creative. Reporting to the Head of Brand Creative, you will collaborate with the brand team to craft a variety of brand empowerment tools, and develop our brand’s identity via making real work through co-creation sessions with all creative channels and disciplines across Square. This is a highly-collaborative role and the ideal candidate has the unique ability to inspire creative partners through their work and their behaviours. The brand team’s job is to both empower and raise the bar, and we believe that everyone’s success is our success.

You Will

  • Create brand guidance tools - In addition to developing Figma brand guidelines and our web brand portal, you will help us learn how to enhance brand management with emerging AI tools and processes.
  • Set the bar for our brand - You will use the core primitives of our brand to make bar-raising examples that show teams how it can stretch into new and exciting ways.
  • Co-create with creative teams - To advance our brand, we embed with each channel and discipline to generate real work and push each other to create the best possible outcomes.
  • Empower through influence - Other teams are responsible for work that goes into the market and you must partner in a way that generates great results without acting as a final approver for everyone’s work.
  • Leverage brand strategy and insights - Brand strategy fluency is crucial to promoting our brand. You should be able to talk about your creative decisions through the prism of brand value - building trust, distinction, recognition, coherency, and affinity.
  • Present creative work to senior stakeholders and core leadership
  • Collaborate with global teams to ensure our brand scales appropriately for regional differences

You Have

  • 12+ years of design experience in a brand-focused creative agency or in-house brand team.
  • A compelling portfolio showcasing brand and interactive work
  • Excellent Typographic and Art Direction sensibilities
  • Experience leading large-scale rebrands for major brands or tech companies
  • Strong expertise in web and motion design tools (Figma, Framer, After Effects, etc…) 
  • Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration and leadership alignment
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Design, Visual Communications, or related field

The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
