The Role

Join the North American SMB Account Management team at Block and play a pivotal role in driving growth and success for our merchant partners! Our team is dedicated to enhancing post-sales revenue for Block’s core businesses, including Afterpay and Cash App, by connecting merchants with the largest and most engaged network of next-generation consumers. Today, we are a partner to merchants of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, merchants  just starting, as well as merchants who began with Afterpay and have grown larger over time. 

As an SMB Account Manager, you'll be at the forefront of helping diverse and dynamic small to medium-sized businesses thrive with Block. Reporting to our SMB and Mid-Market Account Management Lead, your role involves building and executing strategic initiatives to expand post-sales revenue for our SMBs. You'll focus on growing and retaining the SMB portfolio at scale, significantly impacting Block's business by increasing gross profit and revenue, attracting new customers, and reinforcing the strength of the Afterpay and Cash App brands in the market.

In this role, you will manage a premium SMB book of business while dynamically supporting our longtail SMBs. You will be responsible for crafting programmatic strategies that ensure long-term mutual success and retention for a substantial volume of merchants. You will have demonstrated excellence in SMB-level account management, operational/process rigor, data-driven decision-making, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

You Will

  • Be the Voice of Block: Represent Block to top-tier SMB Merchants as a thought-leader in the payments landscape and demonstrate Block’s value as a growth driver for our commerce partners 
  • Quarterback Deals: Be responsible for complex negotiations (expansions & renewals) and execution for the Block organization through methodical deal management based on milestone tracking, KPIs, and partner alignment on opportunities of mutual interest
  • Craft Account Strategy: Develop and pitch powerful narratives that educate our merchants of Block’s value proposition. Effectively communicate with senior decision makers at SMBs.
  • Be a Team Player: Partner closely with cross-functional teams to drive deals forward, including Sales, Marketing, Finance, Product, Risk, Legal, Operations, Customer Service; and with external partners’ cross-functional executives
  • Build Block’s Network: Develop and grow Block’s relationships with leading SMB brands, including their senior executives. 
  • Develop Meaningful Cross-Functional Partnerships: Work closely with cross-functional teams to better support your team in driving merchant growth, including Marketing, Finance, Product, Risk, Legal, Operations, Customer Service. 
  • Be the Voice of the Merchant: Represent the Voice of the Merchant by aggregating and delivering key insights across the organization in a structured, consistent, and proactive manner.

You Have

  • 3+ years experience in high-growth environments in a business development, sales, account management, GTM or strategy role, preferably in a fast-moving technology or financial services company
  • Demonstrated ability to earn trust with key stakeholders, ask the right questions, and use sound business judgment internally and externally at SMB size companies
  • A self-starter mentality, where leaning in and wearing multiple hats in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment is business-as-usual 
  • A hunger to problem solve with analytical rigor. You’re determined to become a skilled salesperson and strategic thinker who comes armed to internal and external conversations with the right data and analysis to make a convincing argument.
  • An operational mindset is critical, with an ability to effectively juggle a large volume of merchants, relationships and organizations by setting a clear vision and implementing robust, scalable processes 
  • Creative storytelling abilities, able to seek out relevant, meaningful data and build business cases to inform partners on Block’s value proposition
  • A willingness to travel for team onsites and industry events

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
