Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Employment Counsel to join Block's dynamic Employment Legal team. You will provide strategic legal guidance on a broad range of employment matters across our global workforce, focusing on supporting the U.S. You'll partner with HR, business leaders, and cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with labor and employment laws, mitigate risk, and foster a positive and inclusive workplace. You will report into our Global Employment Counsel Lead and can work remotely within the continental United States.

You Will

  • Provide advice and counseling on a broad spectrum of employment law issues in the U.S., with a focus on California laws, including: background checks, contingent workers, AI, recruiting, DEI, internal investigations, internal communications, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour, pay equity, terminations, reorganizations, redundancies, and role eliminations.
  • Investigate and respond to claims, demand letters, administrative complaints, audits, and other employment-related inquiries
  • Advise on the employment aspects of special projects, such as corporate reorganizations, restructuring, and M&A (including performing due diligence)
  • Conduct training for employees, managers, and the People team
  • Keep up-to-date on employment laws and provide timely and proactive updates to stakeholders
  • Conduct audits, employment classification reviews, and support other compliance efforts
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and manage projects with a team-oriented approach
  • Evaluate employment practices and policies
  • Draft and review employment related agreements and templates
  • Manage outside counsel on employment matters

You Have

  • J.D. and admitted to the bar in state of residence
  • 5+ years of legal practice in employment law
  • High degree of proficiency in U.S. employment laws (especially California)
  • Experience as an employment litigator, representing companies in disputes
  • Experience analyzing and providing advice on federal, state, and local wage and hour compliance
