Software Engineer, Program Engineering

The Role

At Block, we strive to build the best products in the world, including the ones our customers never see. The Compliance Program Engineering team builds the core infrastructure that supports Block's compliance program and the product teams that depend on it. When Block needs to meet a regulatory obligation, the investigators, analysts, and automated systems doing that work rely on our platforms to understand what is happening across Block's ecosystem and act on it.

We focus on two areas:

1) Unified transaction store and search. Transactions are one of the most important building blocks at Block. We bring transaction data from across Block's products into one place and make it easy to understand, search, and use. This helps the business stay compliant and supports new product use cases. We're investing in data coverage, quality, and usability, and in self-serve tools that make it simple for new product types to onboard.

2) Entity labeling, ingestion, and workflow. We give teams a flexible way to label any entity at Block, such as a customer, account, or transaction, without cluttering core data models. Those labels can trigger downstream effects, so teams can build complex workflows on top of them. Labels can be applied through simple self-serve tools or through high-volume bulk ingestion at scale, which makes automation possible.

As a full stack software engineer on Compliance Program Engineering, you'll design, build, and operate these platforms. We work with an incubator mindset: we start small, prove value quickly, scale what works, and hand mature solutions to a dedicated team. You'll balance delivering value today with building foundations that last. Where business units have similar needs, you'll help them share the same systems so every team can move faster.

You Will

• Partner closely with your team to design, develop, test, ship, and maintain features across our transaction and labeling platforms
• Write high-quality, well-tested code, and participate actively in design reviews and code reviews
• Design and implement systems that work within our microservice and event-driven architectures and handle sensitive customer and financial data with care and correctness
• Improve the coverage, quality, and usability of transaction data so investigators, analysts, and automated systems can trust and act on it
• Build self-serve tools and high-volume ingestion pipelines that let teams across Block onboard new products and label entities without waiting on us
• Partner directly with Compliance, Risk, and product teams to turn regulatory and business requirements into durable, reusable platform capabilities
• Participate in operational ownership of engineering systems, including on-call, incident response, and postmortems
• Demonstrate AI fluency by using AI-powered tools throughout the development lifecycle to improve velocity and quality, while applying sound judgment in their use
• Hold your teammates, and yourself, to high engineering standards
• Learn from and support other engineers through code reviews and technical discussion

You Have

• 3+ years of software development or equivalent experience
• Experience building and maintaining production software systems, and delivering well-scoped projects or features end-to-end (design, build, test, ship, operate) with guidance from more experienced engineers
• Worked across the stack, on backend services and on the interfaces people use to operate them
• Drive to find flaws in a system with many moving parts and take whatever steps are necessary to fix them
• Curiosity about problems that arrive only partly specified, and a habit of asking the questions that make them concrete
• A track record of explaining technical tradeoffs in writing and in person, to engineers and non-engineers alike
• Demonstrated AI fluency, including experience using AI-powered developer tools and the ability to critically evaluate and responsibly apply their outputs
• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience

Even better:

• Experience building platforms or self-serve tools that other engineering teams build on
• Experience with search systems, data modeling, or bulk data ingestion at scale

• Experience working with sensitive data (PII, PCI) or building to privacy, security, or regulatory requirements
• Experience integrating LLMs or agents into production workflows
• Interest in compliance or financial technology is a plus. Deep domain expertise isn't required; we'll teach you.
