Based in Mossel Bay, South Africa, Bitcoin Ekasi is an extension of The Surfer Kids, a nonprofit youth organization that provides free daily surfing and skateboarding lessons to kids from the local township. Bitcoin Ekasi’s goal is to create a bitcoin economy in the community — surf and skate instructors are paid in bitcoin, and local merchants are equipped to take payments in bitcoin. In addition to creating a bitcoin-circular microeconomy, Bitcoin Ekasi has an educational center that provides bitcoin education for local kids. Thanks to the Discovery Grant, they’ve been able to acquire new wetsuits and surfboards for the kids’ surf lessons, and renovate and expand their skatepark. They also have plans to expand their education program to include adults.
