While the holiday season is generally a time for festivities and fun, the season represents something else for scammers — the holidays are a prime opportunity for them to take advantage of increased holiday spending and con people out of their hard-earned money.

There isn’t a simple solution to the growing threat of scams, but there are steps everyone can take to help keep their money safe.

This holiday season, Cash App has once again teamed up with the Financial Technology Association, Venmo, and PayPal to launch the Smarter Than Scams nationwide campaign to bring awareness to shoppers on avoiding payment scams. The campaign uses multiple avenues to reach people where they are — from digital ads as you shop online to billboards and signs at your local public transit station.

Empowering customers is one of the most important things Cash App can do to help prevent scams. “At Cash App, we are committed to empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe in an increasingly digital world. The Smarter Than Scams campaign reflects our dedication to raising awareness about the evolving tactics of scammers and providing practical strategies to help people protect themselves and their finances,” said Brian Boates, Science Lead at Block. “Through this initiative, we’re reaching consumers where they are with clear, actionable education on recognizing and avoiding scams. By collaborating with partners across the industry, we’re building a united front to tackle these challenges head-on and ensure a safer digital environment for everyone."

The truth is, most scams start outside of payment apps. By the time scams reach the point of payment, it’s often too late. Scammers are growing in sophistication, often looking for ways to prey on emotions. For example, a significant number of holiday scams target people’s desire to donate to charity and buy gifts for friends and family.

The Smarter Than Scams campaign shares key tips on how consumers can protect themselves:

  1. Protect your personal information by safeguarding your login details, using different passwords across accounts, and keeping any sign-in codes or magic links private.
  2. Be aware of account activity by ensuring your account notifications, such as two-factor authentication and alerts for new device logins, are turned on.
  3. Pause before you pay by only sending money to people you know and trust; ensure you are verifying and double-checking all recipient information.

Cash App is laser-focused on continuing the fight against scams by educating customers on how they can keep their cash safe.
