Ottawa-based credit union Alterna Savings was founded in 1908. Today, Alterna holds the distinction of being Ontario’s first full-service, member-owned financial institution outside Quebec. Through 40 branches across Ontario and robust digital banking channels, Alterna serves more than 210,000 members with a comprehensive suite of financial services. Alterna was one of the first credit unions to offer micro-loans through their award-winning Community Microfinance Program. This program fosters financial independence and inclusion by providing underserved entrepreneurs, who are often excluded from accessing capital from traditional financial institutions, with critical business assistance, including, financial education, business planning, networking opportunities, and workshops. Since its inception, this program has disbursed millions in loans and continues to make a massive impact on countless lives.
