In 1904, the One Cent Savings Bank — renamed Citizens Savings Bank and Trust Company in 1920 — became the first minority-owned bank in Tennessee. This makes it the oldest continually operating Black-owned bank in the United States. Located in North Nashville, Citizens Bank was founded with the goal of creating opportunities for African-Americans to build wealth and economic security. Today, Citizens Bank remains a privately held, Black-owned company with more than $175 million in total assets. The bank focuses on expanding economic opportunity to economically disadvantaged individuals and underserved communities through access to financial products and services.
