During the Great Depression, Jesse Mitchell and his business associates set out to do something few Black entrepreneurs had done: Establish a bank to serve their community. Their bank — first called Industrial Bank of Washington — opened its doors on August 20, 1934. The bank has grown from six employees in the nation’s capital to more than 140 employees with branches in Washington, DC; Prince George’s County in Maryland; Newark, New Jersey; Harlem, New York; and an Innovation Campus in Largo, Maryland. For 90 years, Industrial Bank has been a strong partner and advocate for small and large businesses, homeowners, and personal banking customers.
